The Beni Kumonryu are a less common form of Kumonryu, they have red along with the black and white. They are scale less and their pattern actually changes throughout the year. No one is absolutely sure what causes the color change, but the theories are a change in temperature or a change in pH. Beni Kumonryu are usually black in the winter. The white and red usually appears in the spring and summer. Beni Kumonryu aren't usually judged by their pattern. Look for good symmetry between the red, black and white. When the color of a Beni Kumonryu is changing, the area turns a blue/greyish color.

Kumonryu means Flying Dragon. In an old Japanese legend, Koi became dragons that flew in the sky. A dragon that flies is called a Kumonryu. The Sumi pattern (black) on this Koi variety changes over time. Because the change of the Sumi moving over the body resembled the flying dragon, the Koi variety was named Kumonryu. Beni Kumonryu is Kumonryu with Hi patterns. Beni is another term for red. Kumonryu is a Doitsu version in the Karasu family. When Karasu were bred to Kohaku, Beni Kumonryu were created. The Hi pattern should be similar to the more linear pattern of Kumonryu rather than the patch pattern of Kohaku.
